History of SWCDs
Minnesota's Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) began in response to the Dust Bowl that was affecting the country in the 1930's. With dust blowing all the way from the Midwest to Washington D.C. it became apparent that farmers needed assistance in altering their techniques in order to more wisely use the water and soil resources around them and to preserve these resources for future generations. In 1938 Minnesota gained it's first SWCD in Winona County. Today there are SWCDs throughout the entire state. SWCDs no longer only focus on farming. SWCDs now have programs focused on forestry, wetlands, and rivers and streams.
