Property Tax Information
In Minnesota, property taxes follow an annual cycle involving: property valuation and classification; budget and levy setting by local taxing jurisdictions; and aids, credits and special programs at the state level. The Auditor’s Office collects all this information in a complex formula which determines tax rates and ultimately, what you pay in property taxes.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue oversees the property tax process and provides guidance, timelines and rules, as determined by law, to the Auditor’s Office. For more information visit www.revenue.state.mn.us/understanding-property-tax.
Property Tax Statement
One tax statement is mailed out annually. State law provides the form and content of each property notice. Each notice contains a box in the upper right corner denoting the steps in the property tax cycle. The middle section of the notice is a breakdown consisting of: credits, which are specific to certain property types; taxes, as broken out by taxing jurisdictions, as well as tax types; and special assessments.
Property owners who have not paid their taxes by November will receive a Courtesy Letter from our office with tax and penalty amounts through the end of the year.
