Recycling Center

Recycling in Lake County is accomplished through joint cooperation between the Lake County Solid Waste Department and private enterprise. Lake County owns and operates a full service recycling facility located within the City of Two Harbors on Recycle Center Drive (across from North Shore Manufacturing.)

Acceptable Items for Recycling

*Aluminum redemption for cash program operated by DAC of Knife River, Monday though Thursday 12:30-2:30PM

  • Oil containers
  • Pizza boxes
  • Plastic plant pots

  • Wax coated cartons
  • Styrofoam
  • Batteries
  • Light bulbs
  • Glass dishware
  • To-go coffee cups and lids
  • Chip, snack, and fast food packaging
  • Medical waste
  • Paper plates
  • Aerosol cans (pesticide aerosol cans can be recycled at Household Hazardous Waste; food aerosols can be placed in the garbage)

Lake County reserves the option to add or subtract services to react to the changing waste stream.

Medical Sharps

Our employees at the recycle center have found medical sharps mixed in with recyclables. Which raises concern for the health and safety of our employees. These are the options to safely dispose of your medical sharps:

  • Lake County Household Hazardous Waste : Accepts medical sharps during business hours from May through September. Containers must be sealed in approved sharps container or a sealed rigid plastic containers (Laundry Detergent) labeled Medical Sharps. Phone number 834-8304 or 834-8303.
  • Western Lake Sanitary District: Accepts medical sharps, free of charge, year round. Hot line number at 722-0761, regular number 722-3336. Sharps must be in a rigid plastic container with a screw-on lid. Laundry detergent jugs or plastic pop bottles work best for storing used sharps.Label the container with a ” House-Hold Medical Sharps” stickers (available from WLSSD)
  • Medical providers may provide the service: Example, Superior Health: accepts medical sharps in approved sharps container for a fee of $5.00 per container. Sharps containers can be purchased at Superior Health Pharmacy for $1.99 each. Phone number is 834-7200.

Mattress Recycling

Bring your unwanted mattress or box spring to the Castle Danger Demolition Landfill on:

Tuesday or Thursday:  12:30-3:00PM or the first Saturday of each month,  8:30AM-11:30 AM
Disposal Fees: Dry – $11 per piece Wet – $20 per piece

Lake County and Goodwill Industries have teamed up to provide an option to recycle that unwanted mattress or box spring.  These products take up a lot of space in our landfills, and are very recyclable into:

  • carpet pads
  • packing materials
  • shipping pads
  • noise abatement products
  • steel products
  • wood mulch

Fall Lake Transfer Station

Fall Lake Township operates a solid waste transfer station . Garbage, recycling, used oil and filters, and yard waste is accepted at the transfer station located at:

May-August: Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday 8:00AM-4:00PM
September: Wednesday and Saturday 8:00AM-4:00 PM
October-April: Saturday 8:00AM-4:00PM
